VCT and resilient tile flooring in commercial buildings accumulates layers of old finish over time. Mopping and buffing maintain the surface between strip-and-recoats, but they do not remove embedded dirt and dulled finish layers. When a floor starts showing yellowing, buildup at the edges, or scuff marks that do not buff out, it is time for a full strip.
Apply floor stripper to dissolve the existing finish coats. Agitate with a slow-speed machine, then remove the slurry with a wet vacuum. Repeat until the floor is down to bare tile.
Rinse the floor with clean water to remove all stripper residue. The floor must be neutralized before any new finish is applied, or the new coats will not bond correctly.
The floor must be completely dry before the first finish coat. Depending on humidity and facility airflow, this can take 30 to 90 minutes.
Apply three to five coats of commercial floor finish, allowing each coat to dry between applications. More coats mean a harder, more durable surface and more gloss.
The final coat needs to cure before foot traffic. We schedule the work so the floor is ready for normal use by the start of the next business day.
